On February 28th, Crankdat headlined Mission Ballroom for the first time and as every artist’s first time headlining the newer Denver venue, he went all out. The stage set up was something I had never seen before. Closest to the edge of the stage was the setup where openers Sharlitz Web and Blanke played before Crankdat closed out the night. Behind that were 2 separate platforms where friends and family stood behind them.
Sharlitz Web
I had only ever listened to Sharlitz Web before; never seen her live. I didn’t know what to expect but assumed she would perform similarly to ALLETCVT (which my assumption was true). Her set was mostly dubby with a little bit of riddim thrown in to cater to Denver. I appreciated that she kept it pretty leveled out and didn’t keep that sound throughout the majority of her set. Her vibes were energetic and she was the perfect opener to start what would be a rowdy night.

Blanke
I was just as excited to see Blanke as I was to see Crankdat. I’ve seen Blanke (as well as his Aeon Mode sets) a handful of times and he always throws down. By the time JP started his set, Mission Ballroom was packed tight like a can of sardines. I think a lot of the attendees made it a point to get there to catch his set. Blanke played tons of fan favorites including a few of his remixes of Ray Volpe tracks and one of my personal favorites, Control VIP.

Crankdat
I was not expecting Crankdat’s set to be what it was (in a good way). I had only seen him once before and that was at North Coast last year. His set was great then, but certainly not comparable to his headlining show. It was wild – tons of lasers, tons of bangers, wild energy and with how packed it was in that venue made it feel so much more intense (at least in my opinion). Near the end of his set he brought out a female artist that many of us are familiar with and that I happened to mention above: ALLEYCVT (but just for one song). As Crankdat wrapped up his set for the night he asked everyone to pull out their phones to do the flashlight thing and played “Fix You” by Coldplay, into “Levels” by Avicii leaving a handful of fans in tears.
I didn’t want the night to end, but as we know everything has to. Given that Crankdat not only sold out, but OVER sold Mission Ballroom – I know its safe to say that his next headlining Denver show will happen at Red Rocks next year and I seriously cannot wait for that. I hope to shoot that show as well but if not, I will certainly do everything to ensure I’m there as a general attendee.
