G Flip @ 9:30 Club

Fans had two opportunities to catch G Flip as they took DC by storm on June 5th and 6th at the 9:30 Club. The second show was added after the first sold out, but the second night was also packed with wall to wall people! Fans were taking every opportunity to see G Flip, some even coming from other states and having seen previous shows, as the tour neared its close.

Florrie

Florrie, a multitalented singer/songwriter/drummer/guitarist, supported both nights of DC with the show I attended on 6/6 being her last. Her debut album “The Lost Ones” came out June 14, and I feel so lucky to have been introduced to her music before the album dropped. Florrie’s music is the perfect blend of indie pop and made me feel that I should be dancing along to every word (which is quite hard to do when you’re also trying to take pictures). She definitely gained a new fan that night.

Her energy was contagious, and she was so much fun to photograph with her dance moves and the disco ball in full swing. Her band was also the perfect compliment to her music. Both band members met Florrie’s energy level and played a huge part in creating such a fun atmosphere for the audience! Florrie and her band’s joy radiated off the stage and made me (along with everyone else in the venue) so happy. It’s a hard feeling to describe but sometimes things just inspire joy in you, and Florrie is definitely an artist that does that!

G Flip

A Show To Remember

G Flip is without a doubt taking the world by storm. The Aussie artist is celebrating incredible success with UK and North American tours and multiple festival appearances, including at the iconic Governors Ball in NYC. G Flip spent their set hopping between the keys, drums, guitar, and dancing – sometimes doing more than one in each song.

Days later, I still can’t fathom going from singing and dancing to singing and drumming and then back again in a single song. The only word I can think to describe it is pure sorcery. They are by all accounts an elite athlete and even that title doesn’t seem to do them justice. On top of that, G Flip also took advantage of the balcony in the 9:30 Club, running through the entire balcony as well as climbing on top of the balcony bar. I’ve been to a lot of shows at the 9:30 Club, and I can say I have NEVER seen anything like it!

The fans were absolutely loving it! So many people got to excitedly interact with G Flip when they were up in the balcony but the people on the floor certainly weren’t left out either! G Flip repeatedly reached out to hold hands with fans at the barricade, gave out a piece of signed merch to a fan (as they do every show), and even gave a pair of signed drumsticks to a couple that got engaged during G Flip’s iconic cover of “Cruel Summer”.

Not So Serious

And to top of it off, G Flip is so incredibly funny and is not afraid to laugh at themselves. While writing the date on the drumsticks, G Flip attempted to crowdsource the date from the crowd, which as you can imagine, resulted in a number of screams all said at different times. In the confusion, they wrote 6/24/24 instead of 6/6/24 and had the whole venue laughing along with them at the mistake. Between laughs, G Flip added the correct date to the second drumstick before they were handed over to the new couple! How cool must it be for a couple to choose your show to commit their lives to each other!?!? I love love and I love spaces that allow queer couples to feel safe celebrating their love with an entire room full of strangers!

Honestly, while all the above musical talent and showmanship make G Flip a great artist, that’s not even the part of G Flip that stands out the most to me. Sure, they are one of the most fun artists to capture. Yes, they rival the music talents of anyone I’ve ever listened to. Of course, their ability to have fun with their fans is a massive draw to attend their shows. But even more important… from everything I’ve seen myself, and heard from fans, G Flip is a phenomenal person who clearly cares very much for their fans and queer people around the world. At every show G Flip establishes the rules of a G Flip show (I’m quoting this from a video from tour that was not the DC stop, but the sentiment was the same each night):

G-Flip Show Rules

  • 1. “You’re not allowed to be a d*ckhead” – no being rude, no pushing, mutual respect for the win! Too often at concerts, I have seen people disrespect other fans instead of allowing everyone to have a good time together.
  • 2. “We absolutely love the LGBTQIA+ community. We love the trans community. We love the non-binary community. We love drag queens. Whoever you are kissing, whoever you are making love to is a-okay. Love is love.”  – G Flip also broke out Pride Flags during their performance, waving them around above their head. This show felt like the perfect way to celebrate Pride.
  • 3. “If anyone suffers from anxiety or depression, thank you for showing up for me today” – G Flip’s acknowledgement of the difficulties people with mental illness face is so refreshing. They spoke about how it can be hard to get out of bed and hard to do social things, and as someone who has struggled with their mental health, this acknowledgement really touched me.
  • 4. “I want to give a shoutout to anyone who rocked up by themselves. You’re awesome!”
  • 5. “If anything happens, anyone faints or passes out or anything like that, in the middle of the crowd, the best thing to do is get your phone lights out and wave them around as a group of people near the person who has fainted, and then we can get security in to help the person who has gone down.”
  • 6. “And the last rule of a G Flip show is just have bloody fun mates!”

To Sum It Up

Whenever possible, I believe in investing my time and attention into good people. That’s why it’s awesome to see an artist whose music I love also be the type of person I can admire. G Flip’s tour has just ended, but you better believe I will 100% be at the next one. Happy Pride Month everyone! I can confidently say one of the best ways I have ever celebrated Pride was attending a G Flip show!
