Souls of Mischief
Emerging from Oakland, California in the early 1990s, Souls of Mischief is a legendary hip-hop group whose influence continues to echo through generations of artists and fans alike. The group is composed of four skilled MCs—A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai—who came together during their teenage years to create a sound that blended lyrical complexity, intellectual depth, and forward-thinking production. Known for their sharp wit, fluid flows, and conscious lyricism, the group quickly carved out a niche in the underground hip-hop scene.
Over the years, Souls of Mischief has released multiple albums, including No Man’s Land (1995), Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution (2000), and Montezuma’s Revenge (2009), among others. Each project showcases their evolution as artists while maintaining the essence of what made them standout from the beginning—rich storytelling, dynamic flows, and a commitment to the foundations of hip-hop culture.
Souls of Mischief is also a foundational pillar of the larger Hieroglyphics collective, a crew of like-minded Bay Area artists including Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, and Pep Love, who share a commitment to artistic independence and lyrical excellence. Together, they’ve established an influential legacy, releasing music on their own Hiero Imperium label and maintaining creative control over their art at a time when many artists were beholden to the constraints of major labels.
