Kim Petras @ The Anthem

On October 12, 2023, Kim Petras took over The Anthem in Washington, D.C. for a high energy show. Supporting her was Alex Chapman.

Alex Chapman

Kicking off the evening, Alex Chapman got the crowd absolutely hyped up. For context, the entire first level of The Anthem is essentially one large pit. Chapman quickly turned that pit into the biggest nightclub in DC. Drinks in hand, everyone in the venue was seen dancing their hearts out to both current hits and notable throwback songs. With the crowd particularly enjoying “Everytime We Touch” by Cascada. Who doesn’t remember jamming out to at least one of those iconic hits in the car at one point in their life?! Personally, Everytime We Touch still sends me rocketing back to memories of my first iPod Touch.

Overall, Chapman was the perfect choice to support Kim Petras on tour with both acts having incredibly high energy vibes. In between acts, the buzz from Chapman’s set could still be felt throughout the whole venue.

Kim Petras

If you thought the buzz in the venue couldn’t get any greater, you had another thing coming with Kim Petras. Between incredibly catchy music, high energy performances, and incredible showmanship, her performance took the roof off The Anthem. Before the music even started, her backup dancers moved around the stage in hooded robes, which had the audience whispering and pointing in anticipation. Then the lights dimmed, the LED screens lit up, a large metal case emerged from the floor…and the crowd ERUPTED! Petras and her backup dancers started at energy level 10 and did not back down. The show utilized large LED screens on the back of the stage which created incredible visuals. The story telling accomplished by Petras, her dancers, and the screens was magnificent and added immensely to the performance.

The theatrics most certainly did not end there. Where some artists may have a mic stand or guitar as props, Petras broke out water guns in an unexpected turn of events for “Superpower Bitch” before brandishing a massive pink whip for “XXX”. It was an impressive display of athleticism and theatrics as Petras danced along the edge of the stage whipping in beat to the music. This certainly did not go unnoticed in the venue as the whole crowd went wild for the playfulness of the props. Especially when the whip came out, fans’ hands were in the air and the audience could be heard screaming the lyrics along with Petras. It can be so easy for props to detract from a performance, but they became an integral, fun part of the show.
