Rico Nasty Brings Electrifying Female Rage Energy to Irving Plaza

Rico

Every fall, while most people shift into their soft indie playlist yearning to live out their Gilmore Girls  fantasy, I tend to go in the complete opposite direction: I blast the rap girlies loud. A hot girl summer shifts to a hot girl fall! My Spotify On Repeat is stacked with the queens of pretty girl rap — Doechii, Doja, Megan, GloRilla, Nicki, and Rico. Vibes are high, “I’m that girl” complex is at 100%, and head is bopping like I’m at a Boiler Room set. And that’s when I’m just in my bedroom.

Midweek in October, Rico Nasty came to play at Irving Plaza in NYC for her Lethal North American Tour. Over a thousand screaming fans came together to celebrate all the eras of Rico’s music, from her 2014 Souncloud start and epic feature on Doja Cat’s Tia Tamera (2018) all the way to now, performing her current album Lethal (released in 2025).

Sadboi

Opener Sadboi gave a full concert experience in a half hour set, and it’s clear that she’s gained a fan base in the Nasty Mob. Hailing from Toronto, Sadboi is touring with Rico for the entirety of the Lethal North American Tour. Her energy, dance ability, stage presence, and crowd engagement kept fans locked in and excited before Rico’s set. She definitely has a spot in the future of hot girl rap. Ending her set with a singalong to Sexyy Red’s favorite song, “We Are Young” by fun., everyone in the crowd was laughing at the joke and actually performing it like their lives depended on it. I can’t say I didn’t join in…

Rico Nasty

Before each set, I tend to do a look on setlist.fm to see the order of the songs I’ll be in the photo pit for. But was I expecting to see a whopping 43(!) songs on the setlist? Absolutely not! While these songs were remixed together to shorten them, I was blown away by the sheer ability Rico has to perform song after song – no breaks – for pretty much 2 hours straight. She’s an impressive and charismatic performer, locking you in from the first beat drop of “WHO WANT IT.” While rap is certainly not my favorite genre, my favorite thing about it is being able to recognize certain aspects of songs, whether it just be a hook or a sample, and be able to say “Oh yeah, I’ve heard this before.” I was already somewhat familiar with Rico’s work, but after the show, I realized how much of her music is really recognizable in pop culture.

Many of her songs — especially “Tia Tamera,” “Smack a B***h,” “OHFR,” “Poppin,” and “No Reason” — have gone viral over the last few years on TikTok for their catchy disses and absolutely crazy beats. Rico is a visionary in the world of female rage rap, as I like to call it. And with a crowd full of devoted fans (who all looked really cool, by the way), I can guarantee they feel the same. When Rico Nasty performs, she’s not just rapping. You can feel the rage and loudness of feelings in her tone and lyrics, but it’s also more than that. She’s an enigma, honestly, and I don’t know how else to describe the character she puts on onstage.

Since starting her music career over ten years ago, Rico Nasty has evolved immensely from just creating teenage trap beats. She’s an effortless performer who connects with everyone at her shows through epic, intense performances that will have you sweating in the club.
