STS9 returned to Denver, CO for a two-night run as they normally do – however this year was slightly different. The first show took place at Ogden Theatre on July 19th, with the second night to take place at none other than Red Rocks Amphitheatre. In the past, Sound Tribe has been known to host both nights at Red Rocks. Little did anyone know that this year’s second night would be canceled moments before the band took the stage due to weather conditions.
STS9
The Ogden set brought in a heavy crowd. The venue was packed, so much so that it was difficult to move through the crowd. There was hardly any room for someone to shift and allow you to slip by. There were no openers this night and the band took the stage at approximately 8pm. As the five members walked out, the crowd hollered before coming to a silence. The first note struck as various arrays of color were shown from the fixtures amongst them.
The Show
The set was beautiful. I personally will only listen to Sound Tribe if I’m seeing them live. In my opinion there’s so much more to them when you’re hearing them and watching them in the flesh over speakers and/or a screen of some sort. The beauty of their sound, energy, how they play together, and the simplicity of their production is always so on point.
One of my favorite things about seeing STS9 live are the simple looks they exchange with each other throughout the set. Their facial expressions exhibit a compliment towards one another. Along with how they glance at each other. You can always tell when a member gets lost in the set. They often close their eyes and usually leave them shut for several minutes before opening them again. I’ve never seen any other band do this like I have Sound Tribe, and you can’t help but get lost with them.
The Crowd & Conclusion
The crowd is always fun to take in as well. They get just as lost in the music as the band does. Many also close their eyes during certain moments or move with the sync of the sound. When vibrant colors shine throughout the venue, many fans cheer, as it gives you this feeling of euphoria. The fan base is an overall respectful and loving community as some would classify a “hippie” like crowd. This makes for more and easier connections (as far as making new acquaintances would go). As well as a much more enjoyable experience all around.
STS9 played a two-hour set before concluding the night in preparation for the following night’s set. Which happened – however it was done backstage and aired live through their Instagram story.
