The Vaccines @ The Belasco

The Vaccines took The Belasco by storm on February 6, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. With Thus Love warming up the stage, it was quite a lovely night.

Thus Love

Hailing from Brattleboro, Vermont, Thus Love filters cathartic themes of struggle, affirmation, and unity through sparse post-punk. On their 2022 debut album Memorial, the band’s sound encompassed noisy experimentalism, glam, jazz, and even classical influences, while 2024’s All Pleasure added more swagger and sensuality to Thus Love’s sound.

The Vaccines

The Vaccines have been fixtures of London’s indie rock scene since 2011. The release of their platinum-selling debut album, What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? The favorites continued to find success both at home and abroad.

The Vaccines were formed in 2010 around the talents of Justin Young, Árni Arnason, Freddie Cowan, and Pete Robertson. Evoking names like the Strokes and the Ramones, they released their debut single, “Post Break-Up Sex,” in 2011. That debut, What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?, appeared in the U.K. then on North American shores later. The LP would eventually go platinum which established the Vaccines as one of England’s most formidable modern rock bands. Released in 2012, Come of Age, the group’s sophomore outing, was produced by Ethan Johns. It became their first album to reach number one on the U.K. charts.

For their third full-length effort, the Vaccines opted for a change of pace. They traveled to America to record 2015’s English Graffiti with producer Dave Fridman and experimental hip-hop producer Cole M. Greif-Neill. English Graffiti appeared in late May 2015 and included the hit singles “Handsome” and “Dream Lover.” In 2018, the band released the fiery “I Can’t Quit”. Having replaced Robertson with Timothy Lanham and Yoann Intonti, the Vaccines continued to expand their sound. They evidenced by their punchy and dynamic fifth studio album, 2021’s Back in Love City. It would be the last studio album to feature guitarist Freddie Cowan, who left the fold the following year. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Andrew Wells, 2024’s Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations saw the band deliver an assured yet reflective set of songs rooted in themes of loss and heartbreak.
