Melanie Martinez

As lights are dimmed, signaling the start of the main event, you can feel the anticipation of the crowd. Towards the back of the stage, a screen appears with images of a nursery and a bassinet. The crowd cheers as Melanie Martinez appears on a lift, making it look as if she’s inside the bassinet.

Set / Era One

She kicks off her first set with “Crybaby”, the song introducing the main character of this trilogy. Throughout, she sings songs such as “Dollhouse” and “Carousel,” where she rides a giant rabbit as the screen in the background has a spinning carousel. During “Soap”, bubbles were blown onto the crowd! Towards the end of this first set, we get invited to Crybaby’s “Pity Party,” which incorporates giant inflatable candles and heart shaped balloons that she pops with a pink axe. This set ends with “Mad Hatter,” which makes a perfect transition to her next set, K-12.

Set / Era Two

Through the K-12 set, we are still following Crybaby’s story but now she is an adolescent in school. We get transitioned to this story through a shorter version of “Wheels on the Bus”, as well as amazing visuals. The crowd got to see many props, such as a seesaw for “Class Fight”, pink wires that made her look like a puppet for “Show and Tell”, and a crowd favorite, the gurney that she sang on in “Nurse’s Office”. At the end of this set, we witness the death of Crybaby, who is shot by cupid’s arrow.

But the show isn’t over yet. A beautiful interlude, which includes two of Martinez’s dancers, transitions us to her last and longest set. This is where we see the rebirth of the character, Portals.

Set / Era Three

During this set, Martinez appears wearing her four eyes nymph mask. She kicked this set off by singing, “DEATH” which is the story of Crybaby’s resurrection. From lasers to fire, this set had the most effects and visuals than her previous two eras. During “SPIDER WEB”, she appeared on the lift with wings, joined by one of her dancers dressed as a fly. She also had many props, such as a sword when she was fighting off a dragon on “Battle of the Larynx”, inflatable mushrooms and tombstones for “Crybaby” as well as Crybaby’s friend, Angelita (for those who are new, Angelita is a vital character in the K-12 movie).

To Conclude

Melanie Martinez stays in character throughout the whole show, so there is no crowd interaction until the very end. Despite her staying in character, a series of posters do appear on the screens with messages with current events in the world. The posters state messages such as “FREE PALESTINE” and “RESISTANCE IS LOVE.” This tour also shows off Martinez’s amazing vocals and breath control. She is dancing, jumping, popping balloons and even fighting a dragon all while singing.

“The Trilogy Tour” is the show that you do not want to miss this year. With an amazing storyline, three different settings, many visuals and effects, it is a show that has it all. It includes songs for newer fans as well as the ones who have been following her since the beginning.
