Waterparks @ Mission Ballroom

Waterparks welcomed themselves back to Denver on March 2nd, 2024, when they played Mission Ballroom! Starting the night off were poptropicaslutz! and Loveless.

poptropicaslutz!

Leaning into the myriad of artists that influenced 21-year-old Christian Cicilia and 22-year-old Nick Crawford’s individual music tastes, they both draw considerable inspiration from a variety of genres and decades. Imbuing their auto-tuned melodies with traces of Fall Out Boy, Hellogoodbye, Juice WRLD, Kelly Clarkson, and ‘10s SoundCloud rap, their debut EP Just In Case The World Ends (2022) showcased their penchant for blending maximalist production with pop-punk for a highly danceable fusion of “hyper-punk”. In Face For The Radio, they up the distortion levels, leading with fuzzed out guitars and a sprinkling of alt-pop synths, with sugary melodies and emphatic rhythms that get you on your feet.

Loveless

Loveless is an alternative rock/emo pop band from Los Angeles, originally formed by Julian Comeau and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail in the fall of 2019 who got big from making pop punk covers on YouTube. Seamlessly blending the sounds of the aughts with a fresh and modern twist, Loveless combines elements of pop, rock, and emo for a sound entirely their own. With a string of hard-hitting singles and electric collaborations quickly paving their way, Loveless is vying to become your new favorite band with their debut album “Loveless I” out now.

Waterparks

Waterparks never sits still. The Houston trio, Awsten Knight [vocals, guitar], Otto Wood [drums], and Geoff Wigington [guitar], manically move forward. Constantly shucking and jiving between fits of rock, alternative, and electronic with pop ambition and hip-hop’s bold and blatant disregard for the rules.

In 2020, the boys only pick up the pace as they ready new music after signing a new deal with 300 Entertainment. “You don’t have to stick to one thing,” exclaims Awsten. “Over the years, we’ve gotten better at switching it up. By making moves like getting with 300 (an almost exclusively hiphop oriented label) and not forfeiting our guitars once we signed the deal, I think we’re actually taking steps to help rock. Either way, fuck genres and expectations. There’s no reason to be limited.” By doing so, these musicians consistently raise the bar. 2019’s FANDOM elevated them to new critical and commercial peaks. Marking a series of career bests, it landed at #2 on the Billboard Top Alternative Albums Chart, granting their first Top 40 debut on the Billboard Top 200. KERRANG! rated it “4-out-of-5 stars,” and MTV admitted, “We have no choice but to stan.”
