The Blind Boys of Alabama
The Blind Boys of Alabama are a legendary gospel group whose rich history dates back to 1939, when they first formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in Talladega. With roots in traditional jubilee gospel, they helped shape the sound of modern spiritual music by blending powerful vocal harmonies with deep soul, blues, and roots influences. Over the decades, their stirring performances and unwavering commitment to faith-based music earned them global acclaim and a devoted fanbase.
The group has received five Grammy Awards, including Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album, as well as a prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. They are also recipients of a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and are inductees in both the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. Their music transcends generations and genres, and their collaborations have included artists such as Ben Harper, Peter Gabriel, Bon Iver, Willie Nelson, and Taj Mahal.
In August 2023, The Blind Boys of Alabama released Echoes of the South, a powerful return to their spiritual and musical roots. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album and added to their growing list of accolades. In March 2024, they released Spirit of the Century, a memoir-style group history featuring personal reflections and stories from the band members. Today, the Blind Boys continue to tour internationally, bringing their uplifting message and timeless sound to stages around the world while actively collaborating with artists across soul, Americana, gospel, and contemporary music.
