Greta Van Fleet @ Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse

Greta Van Fleet stopped into the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, OH on September 23, 2023. It was the last show of their “Starcatcher Tour”, putting on one of the most memorable performances. Surf Curse did nothing short of amazing, & when it comes to warming up a crowd, there were killer. With a setlist packed full of diverse songs they had the crowd ready to start the show.

Surf Curse

Drummer/vocalist Nick Rattigan & guitarist/vocalist Jacob Rubeck first met at the age of 13 in a Las Vegas middle school. They made their inauspicious start as “Buffalo 66”.

The duo eventually changed their name to Surf Curse after moving to Reno. This is where Rattigan attended college at the University of Nevada and Rubeck washed dishes in senior citizen facilities. The name change inspired by a Brady Bunch episode & the beachy, lo-fi rock that was then sweeping indie culture. The band built their reputation on hooky songs that lived by the adage of “write what you know”. For them, this was heartbreak, disillusionment and movies.

Greta Van Fleet

The band formed in 2012 in Frankenmuth, Michigan by twin brothers Josh and Jake Kiszka, their younger brother Sam, and Kyle Hauck.  Jake Kiszka’s dream was creating a band, and he joined his high school band to further that goal, where he eventually met Hauck.

Practicing music together in the Kiszka’s family garage led to recruiting brothers Josh and Sam to play, and later to form the band. The band name was created when Hauck heard a relative mention Gretna Van Fleet, a resident of Frankenmuth; their use of the variation on her name was done with her (subsequent) blessing. Hauck was forced to leave the band in October 2013, replaced by the brothers’ good friend Danny Wagner.

Greta Van Fleet’s music has been categorized as hard rock, blues rock, and progressive rock.
