Electrifying Night: The Backseat Lovers Dazzle Boulder Crowd at Fox Theatre

On April 21, 2025, The Backseat Lovers returned to Boulder for the second night of their sold-out run at the Fox Theatre, delivering a dynamic performance that captivated the audience. The Utah-based indie rock quartet—Joshua Harmon, Jonas Swanson, KJ Ward, and Juice Welch—showcased their signature blend of emotionally charged songwriting and high-energy instrumentation, performing tracks from their acclaimed albums When We Were Friends and Waiting to Spill.

Opening the evening was Jonny’s Day Out, an ambient indie rock ensemble known for their cinematic soundscapes and experimental arrangements. Their set featured selections from their debut EP, Please Excuse Our Mess, setting an evocative tone for the night.

Jonny’s Day Out is a Portland-based indie rock band known for blending ambient textures with dynamic instrumentation.Formed by singer-guitarist Avery Haines and multi-instrumentalist Eli Goldberg, the group expanded to include drummer Will Dowden, bassist Blu Midyett, and trumpet/keyboard player Jude Abare. Their music seamlessly transitions from blaring guitars to cinematic horn passages, softly sung ballads, and dreamy soundscapes. Their debut EP, Please Excuse Our Mess, produced by Graham Jonson (aka quickly, quickly), showcases their experimental approach and dynamic range.

A distinctive element of their identity is the bunny mask, a symbol that emerged during recording sessions and has become emblematic of their artistic persona.  In November 2024, they released their second EP, Bear, Hello, further exploring their ambient indie rock sound. Jonny’s Day Out continues to captivate audiences with their unique blend of musical styles and evocative performances.

The Backseat Lovers

The Backseat Lovers are an indie rock band hailing from Provo, Utah, known for their emotionally charged lyrics and captivating live performances. Formed in 2018, the band consists of Joshua Harmon (lead vocals, guitar), Jonas Swanson (lead guitar, vocals), KJ Ward (bass), and Juice Welch (drums, vocals). Their debut EP Elevator Days introduced their nostalgic yet fresh sound, quickly catching the attention of indie fans nationwide.

The release of their 2019 full-length album When We Were Friends marked a turning point in their career. The standout single “Kilby Girl” went viral, earning chart recognition and over 300 million streams. In 2022, they elevated their artistry with Waiting to Spill, their first release under Capitol Records. The album showcased deeper themes, layered arrangements, and a cinematic sonic progression. Critics praised the band’s maturity and emotional vulnerability, and the record topped several alternative and indie charts. The Backseat Lovers have since graced the stages of major festivals like Lollapalooza and Newport Folk Festival and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS This Morning.

Now with over 800 million global streams and hundreds of thousands of tickets sold, The Backseat Lovers continue to grow their legacy as one of indie rock’s most exciting and heartfelt acts. Their momentum shows no signs of slowing as they connect with new audiences through powerful performances and honest storytelling.
